Become a Volunteer!

Interested in volunteering at the Rogue Gallery & Art Center?  As a not-for-profit organization, we rely heavily on volunteers throughout the year to conduct our many activities, and the Rogue Gallery & Art Center can always use new volunteers. As a volunteer, you must  have an interest in art - beyond that, job descriptions and skills necessary vary and training is provided for many of the positions.  Our volunteer positions range from retail sales to gardening - exhibit installation to handyman - teacher's aide to envelope stuffer.  In return for your time and effort, you will:

  • Meet interesting and talented Rogue Valley artists, students and their supporters (like yourself.)
  • Receive a 10% discount on classes and workshops.
  • Receive a 10% discount on retail items in the Gallery Shop.
  • Receive a 10% discount on events such as the Artini Party and annual Auction dinner.
  • Help a very worthy non-profit organization who relies heavily on volunteer staffing.

Retail Sales & Receptionist

Duties

Greet & track visitors, answer phones, gift shop sales & inventory

Benefits

Good experience helping a busy non-profit organization, plus the opportunity to hone your customer relations and retail sales skills. Letters of recommendation available upon successful completion of volunteer job description.

Training

Orientation on shop procedures and systems.

Qualifications

Good telephone etiquette and comfortable speaking with a broad range of people.  Some retail experience.  Good organizational ability and willingness to ask questions when needed for clarification. Self-starter.  Dependable.

Time Needed

Minimum 4 hours per month, 1 day per month (Tuesday through Friday, 11:00am to 3:00pm)

Artist Reception/Third Friday Volunteer

Duties

May include the following; greet & track patrons, answer phones, sales transactions, help with beverage or food table.  Assist with set up and take down.

Good experience helping a busy non-profit organization, chance to meet many local art lovers and share in the excitement of our events.

Training

On site orientation.

Qualifications

Work easily with others, comfortable speaking with a broad range of people.

Time Needed

Usually Friday evenings 5-8pm once or twice a month (you need not be available for all of them)

Children's Classroom Assistant

Duties

Assist art teacher with hands-on help in children’s art classes.  Assist with set-up and take down of tables, chairs and art materials.  Organizing, cleaning and preparing materials.

Excellent opportunity to learn about teaching art to children.  Letters of recommendation available upon successful completion of volunteer job description.

Training

On the job training.

Qualifications

Enjoy art and children.  Reliability a must.  Experience working with children, and/or knowledge of child behaviors, and teaching methods helpful but not necessary.

Time Needed

Wednesday afternoons 1:00 to 4:30pm during the school year, also some summer positions available.


Education Assistant  (This position is currently filled)

Duties

Assist the Education Director in running the art education program.  May assist with class schedule preparation, which may include researching and/or calling art teachers, writing class descriptions, input and layout of class schedule information and creating class sign-up sheets.  Help create and distribute flyers.  Assist with all aspects of the education program.

Training

Education Director will provide initial training and on-going support.

Qualifications

Some computer experience, comfortable on the phone, good organizational and communication skills.

Time Needed

Six hours a week minimum.  Two term commitment preferred.

Development Assistant  (This position is currently filled)

Duties

Assist the Development Director with spreading the word about and finding supporters for the Rogue Gallery & Art Center.  Make preliminary phone calls to potential businesses, sponsors and the media, help with promotions, grant preparation and fundraising.

Interact with many interesting people in the community, the satisfaction of helping secure the future of Medford's only non-profit community art center, looks great on resume.

Training

Development Director will provide initial training and on-going support.

Qualifications

Computer experience, comfortable on the phone and speaking with a broad range of people, comfortable asking for donations, good writing and organizational skills, motivated self-starter.  Extroverted people-person a plus!

Time Needed

Approximately 15 hours a month.  Flexible schedule - some work in the Gallery, some work out in the community.  Prefer someone who can commit to a 4 to 6 month timeframe.

Exhibit Assistant

Duties

Help hang our ten yearly exhibits.  Some light spackling and touch-up painting is usually required.

1 time a month.

Mail Team

Duties

May include the following; stuff envelopes, stick on labels, collate, sort, seal envelopes.

Be a part of our fun mail team.  Good job for friends or parents and children to do together.

Training

On-site.

Qualifications

Reliable, enjoy working with a group.

Time Needed

1-2 times a month.  You don’t need to be available for all of them.  Bulk mailings generally take place during the work day, in the morning or early afternoon.

Maintenance Person

Duties

Assist with upkeep of art center building.  Do carpentry, plumbing & painting.  May assist in set-up and take-down of exhibitions.

Qualifications

Hard worker, dependable, committed, follow through with plans.

Time Needed

Flexible schedule, approximately 4 hours a week.

Benefit Auction Volunteer

Duties

Help produce our annual benefit auction, the Rogue Gallery & Art Center’s biggest annual fundraiser.  The Benefit Auction needs volunteers to serve on the planning committee, help procure auction items, help prepare the materials before the event and to serve in a variety of ways during the event itself.

Good experience in event planning.

Training

The Development Director and Auction Committee Chair will train you and provide ongoing support.

Qualifications

Some computer experience, comfortable on the phone, good organizational and communication skills.

Time Needed

6 hours per week minimum during auction season (July, August & September.)  Two year commitment preferred.

Janitor

Duties

Vacuum and sweep floors including those in the classroom, dust and clean counters, shelves, etc.  Clean kitchen area and bathroom, empty garbage cans and sweep walkways.

Benefits

The satisfaction of maintaining a clean environment at Medford’s only non-profit community art center.  Membership after 10 hours of service.

Training

On-site orientation.

Qualifications

Reliable, hard worker, self-starter.  Work with minimum supervision.

Time Needed

1-2 hours a week

Poster Distribution Team

Duties

Be on call to hand out and post posters and/or handbills on a designated route (volunteer’s choice) Mount posters on windows or information boards with the permission of the management, using tape or thumbtacks.  Be personable and informative.  Return excess to Rogue Gallery & Art Center.  Note key places on your route to help develop/update accurate poster route information.

Benefits

Good job for a parent and child or friends to do together.  Fun way to interact with people in the community.  Membership after 30 hours of service.  Lots of appreciation from Center staff.  Letter of reference.

Training

On-site.

Qualifications

Interest in the Center and its events.  Respectful of other’s wishes.  Dependable.

Time Needed

2-4 hours, once or twice a month.  Work on your own schedule.

Gardening Volunteer (This position is currently filled.)

 Duties

Help keep our Gallery Garden green by cleaning away garden debris, sweeping the patio and walkways & pruning, planting and fertilizing as necessary.

Benefits

Enjoy the gallery sculpture garden.

Training

On-site.

Qualifications

Interest in and knowledge of horticulture.  Knowledge of sprinkler systems and ability to repair them would be helpful.

Time Needed

2-4 hours, once or twice a month.  Work on your own schedule.
