Are you looking for more in-depth art instruction for your child during the school year? Our Afterschool Art Studio is loads of fun, yet serious art instruction for children. Lessons change each month so children can build on their skills and learn new techniques. In addition to a focus on the techniques of drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking, each session offers a look into other media, art history, and an introduction to important artists’ work.
Here are the details if you’d like your child to develop his or her inner artist through our Afterschool Art Program:
STUDIO 1: For children in grades 1 - 6: Wednesdays 2 to 5PM
(Corresponds with Medford School District’s early-release Wednesdays)
Paint, draw, sculpt, print, explore, create, and be inspired by introductory art lessons in our spacious & fully-equipped art studio!
February 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 $72 members/ $85 non-members

STUDIO 2 (intensive): For youths in grades 4 - 9: Tuesdays 4:30 to 6PM
Draw and paint from life and the imagination with a focus on basic design, color theory, art history, and learning to “see” as an artist.

Monthly pre-registration is required, prices vary due to the number of sessions each month. Class fees include high quality art materials. This is our most popular art class – reserve your child’s space today!
Create and Explore on Non-School Days
Kids and their parents love our popular Drop In & Draw program, which provides an atmosphere of playful, self-expression. We follow the Medford School District calendar and host “Drop In & Draw” on days when school is not in session on Monday.
Each session begins with a short guided drawing lesson and offers experiences with a variety of mediums. This flexible format allows children to create and explore at their own pace, while still receiving instruction as needed.

Start with Art-Making Art Together
NEW! with Amy Godard-Nevickas for ages 3 - 6
Tuesdays, February 7 & March 6, 10:30-11:30AM $10 per day—introductory price!
This is an interactive art class for parent and young child. As a team, the parent/guardian and child will make art together, learning about color, shapes, and lines helping to develop your child’s imagination while strengthening fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Be prepared to get a little messy, paint, sculpt, print, draw, make crafts and to learn songs and finger plays to enhance each project.
Cartooning and Maquettes for Beginners
with Ted Helard for ages 6 - 12
Saturdays, 2/4, 11, 18, 25: 10-11:30AM $51 members/ $60 non-members
Learn to construct creative and unique comics with the basic concepts of cartooning through the manipulation of three basic 3D shapes: the sphere, the cube, and the cylinder. Participants will learn to transform these shapes into simple cartoon figures and characters, ready to be brought to life by young artists’ stories, expression, and creativity!
Earth Paints and Nature-Inspired Art
with Leah Mebane for ages 8 - 13
Saturday, 3/17, 10AM - 12PM $42 members/ $50 non-members- includes Earth Paint Kit to take home (retail value $29.99). “Go green” in the art studio for St. Patty’s Day and for the Earth and learn how to make earth paints from natural pigments and colored clay. Create your own brushes from plant stalks and use your new artist tools to create unique and natural art projects including eco-stationary with leaf and vegetable prints, glue batik designs with earth paints, and painting smooth river stones for your garden or home.
Teen Drop In & Draw Open Studio
with Brooke Nuckles Gentekos for ages 12 - 17
Thursday & Friday, January 12 & 13, 12 - 3PM $15 per day– introductory price!
Teens “take over” the Art Studio to Drop-In and Draw, Paint, Sculpt, Craft, Print, and express themselves during this open studio for middle school and high school students, corresponding with Medford School District’s release days. Students in grades 7 - 12 will create DIY, collaborative, and “outside of the box” art projects inspired by contemporary artists.

Saturdays, April 14 & 21, 12 - 4PM $63 members/ $75 non-members
Come explore the world of photography as an expressive art form! Learn how to take more creative photographs with your digital camera and work with a variety of art materials to alter and embellish your photographs. Experiment and express yourself by hand coloring photographs, photo collage, heat transfer photos onto fabric and applying images to non-paper surfaces. Teen participants will need to have a working digital camera and fully charged batteries.
Visual Storytelling through Cartoon and Comics
with Ted Helard for ages 13 +
Saturdays • April 7, 14, 21, 28 • 10 - 11:30 AM $51 members/ $60 non-members
Discover the craft of creating sequential art (i.e. comics and cartoons) as you learn the basic concepts of graphic storytelling. Participants will learn page layout, panel design, and visual composition in the development of effective pictorial storytelling. Some drawing and/ or writing experience will be helpful.
