The Science and Practice of Color with Sarah F. Burns

6 sessions, Thursdays, Oct. 1- Nov. 5, 12-3:30pm

FREE lecture Sept. 17, 2-3:30pm!

A color bootcamp for painters of all types!

COLOR is a two-edged sword for artists – we LOVE it AND we often struggle with it!
Sometimes it doesn’t feel subtle enough, sometimes it’s too muddy. There’s “color theory” which sounds scientific but turns out is a little squishy.

In this fun and approachable class we will debunk persistent color myths, explore the science of color, really learn to understand color and apply it in our work.

This course has five main sections, with slide talks, exercises and demos. We go into materials, the science of color, how to get great color, light effect, composing with color and MUCH MORE.

This NOT a sip and paint! This is a serious, thought provoking, “AHA” moment-filled exploration of visual science, art history, materials and creativity.  This is the rich, deep stuff you’ll apply in your artistic practice for the rest of your life!

The lessons and exercises can be applied in any material and style. All experience levels are welcome – if you would like to have more confidence using color in your art, this class is for you!

Join us for a free Introduction to the class, Sarah will share a slide talk with an overview of what will be covered and some of the exercises included.  Sarah will discuss options for materials so artists can be prepared to work in the media of their choice.  Get all your questions answered and get excited for a great series!

Registration is $265 (discounts available depending on membership level).

Sarah Burns is a classically trained painter who makes paintings and illustrations depicting the inspiring and grounded beauty of everyday life, notably landscapes of Southern Oregon. She preserves and documents her subjects using proven traditional methods and materials.

Solar Plate Printing with Suzy B. Hudson

3 sessions. Saturdays, Sept. 19- Oct 3, 11am-2:30pm

Solar plate is a printmaking medium comprised of using a metal plate with a UV-sensitive coating. There are two ways to make images: Intaglio and relief. Intaglio gives a fine texture from the plate being “etched.” Relief is used to bring broader marks. We will learn both techniques using 4×5 inch plates during three sessions.

Registration is $120 + $30 material fee (discounts available depending on membership level).

Suzy has been taking pictures since she got her first Brownie box camera at 6. After taking photography in college, she skipped the degree process and began her photography career in Dublin, Ireland. From there to Princeton, NJ, Paris, France, and Honolulu, Hawaii. After landing in Oregon, while completing her Studio Art degree at SOU, she discovered printmaking, specifically photo-etching. After a demonstration of Solarplate with Dan Weldon AT RGAC, she began using this much simpler technique to use her photos in printmaking. She has worked out of Proof Studio and Gallery in Talent, the Ashland Art Center, and now the studio at Rogue Gallery and Art Center.  She has taught art classes at Proof, Ashland Art Center, and Ashland Middle School.

Exploring Encaustics: Intro to Painting with Beeswax with Desiree DeMars

Saturday, Oct. 24, 11am-3pm

Encaustic means “to heat or to burn in” and uses a medium of beeswax, pigment and resin as the foundation. Originating with Greek shipbuilders waterproofing vessels and decorating statures around the 5th century BC, it thrived in Roman Egypt with the famous Fayum mummy portraits around 1st-3rd centuries AD.

We will explore this luminous ancient art and learn now to paint with a beeswax based medium. Along with basic techniques using wood cradles, you will explore how to integrate mixed media to create collages and mono-prints on a variety of papers to create with the medium.

Tuition is $100 tuition + $25 material fee (discounts available depending on membership level).

I have been a vessel of light and a bridge for merging the ancient and the new for over 27 years. My journey began through my own exploration of yoga, meditation, and nutrition as a teen.  A highly sensitive creative, I was blessed with a grandmother who practiced healing prayer, and was inspired to continue on a long and winding road to study body work, plant medicine, and subtle energy techniques through my private practice in the Chicago area for over 15 years.
